The Syneto Approach to Hyperconvergence.

Why Syneto built a different kind of HCI — one without forced license bundles, distributed-storage tax, or vendor lock-in.

Document scope

Contrasts the distributed-filesystem HCI school (vSAN, Nutanix) with the Syneto single-filesystem-per-cluster approach. Honest tradeoff matrix, performance math, when to pick each model.

Two schools03
Chapter 01 · Two schools

Distributed FS vs single FS.

Most HCI products (vSAN, Nutanix) use a distributed filesystem that stripes data across all nodes. Syneto chose a single-filesystem-per-cluster model with explicit replication groups. The tradeoff is meaningful.

Min cluster size 3 nodes 1 node
Storage overhead 30–40% capacity 0% mono / 50% mirror
East-west BW Heavy every write Local-first, async replica
Edge / 1-node Not supported Primary use case
Failure domain Implicit cluster-wide Explicit per replica grp

Chapter 02 · Architecture

Inside a single-FS HCI node.

VM workload Local read/write Hypervisor ESXi or Hyperion SyFS Single-FS per cluster ARC RAM cache L2ARC NVMe cache SPA Allocator / parity Vdev mirrors / RAID-Z Local NVMe + SATA SSD Smart Replicator → peers Async, delta-only
Reads stay local (NVMe hot tier + ARC). Writes commit to local mirror/RAID-Z, then async-replicate to peers — no synchronous cross-cluster path.

Why this matters05
Chapter 03 · Why this matters

What the Syneto model unlocks.

Mid-market reality

50–500 VMs across 1-4 sites. Distributed-FS overhead doesn't pay back at that scale. Single-FS is right-sized.

Edge sites

A single HYPER Edge G2 with SyFS is a complete IT site. Distributed-FS HCI requires 3+ nodes minimum.

Data protection first

SyFS makes Recovery Points and replication native primitives, not bolt-ons. Distributed FS treats them as separate engines.

No license tax

Hypervisor + storage + protection + DR are one SynetoOS license. No per-VM or per-TB add-on SKUs.

Honest tradeoff06
Chapter 04 · Honest tradeoff

When distributed-FS still wins.

Distributed-FS HCI wins for
  • Massive scale (1,000+ VMs, 10+ nodes)
  • Single global namespace required
  • Parity striping across nodes
  • Hyperscale operator-style fleets
  • Custom analytics on raw object stores
Single-FS HCI (Syneto) wins for
  • Mid-market with predictable workloads
  • Edge / branch / retail sites
  • Strict data-residency boundaries per dataset
  • Mixed VMware + KVM hypervisor strategies
  • Compliance environments (NIS2 / DORA / GxP)
  • Teams that want operational simplicity
There is overlap

For customers in the 8-20 node sweet spot with mixed workloads, both schools work. Pick the one whose operational model fits your team — not the marketing slide.
